Damascus Declaration

The Damascus Declaration is the largest opposition gathering in Syria, which was formally launched when five political groups and nine prominent opposition figures signed the Damascus Declaration for Democratic Change in October 2005. The statement blamed the monopoly of state power in Syria for more than thirty years for creating “an authoritarian, totalitarian, and cliquish [fi'awi] regime that has led to a lack of [interest in] politics in society” and called for the opening of a representative political system which guarantees basic individual freedoms, calling, for the first time, for democratic change (as opposed to reform).  >>
