In August 2000, Seif took the initiative to call publicly inside the Syrian Parliament for an end to the emergency law that was imposed by the Ba'ath Party in 1963. Later, Seif organized an informal group known as the “Friends of Civil Society” that discussed political issues in his house. Seif furthered his involvement in politics and advancement of democratic values by forming his own party in 2000, which he named the Movement for Social Peace. The same year, after calling for a new constitution to be drafted, he received a letter from the public prosecutor in Damascus charging him with violation of the constitution. Seif was arrested by the Syrian regime on January 28, 2008, after participating in Damascus Declaration meetings in December. He is currently being held without access to much needed medical treatment. >> |
